Sunday Spotlight: Cyanotypes in Da Streets with Bree Zav 12/6 6:00-9:00 PM Sliding Scale/Pay What You Can Are you ready to immerse yourself in the captivating world of cyanotype? Invented in 1842, cyanotypes were first used to copy text, and the process quickly became a photographic method. Within a year, Anna Atkins printed the first photo book, using cyanotypes to copy algae specimens. It was later used to reproduce technical drawings known as “blueprints”. Today, it has become an art form to reproduce photographs and photograms. The latter is created by laying objects on treated paper, fabric, or glass. The simple process is environmentally safe and easy to do at home with minimal materials. The cyanotype process is one of the earliest forms of photography. The process involves using chemistry and water to create a light-sensitive emulsion that reacts to a UV light source such as the sun or UV lamps. After the emulsion is exposed to light, the print is dipped into a mix of water and hydrogen peroxide to develop the image, resulting in a blue-toned image. Various types of compositions can be created using the cyanotype process. During the Contact workshops, guests will learn two unique printing techniques: photogram printing, wherein objects are placed directly atop the light-sensitive emulsion, and traditional negative printing, which uses photographic negatives to create a positive cyanotype print. All you need to bring: Camera (a Camera phone will work), Everything else will be either provided or found along the way!
